Miss Teen USA winner to keep crown despite racist tweets

LAS VEGAS » The new Miss Teen USA will get to keep her crown despite an outcry over tweets she once wrote using racist language.

The Miss Universe Organization, which owns the Miss Teen USA pageant, issued a statement today chastising Karlie Hay’s words but also “supporting her continued growth.”

After she was crowned Saturday night in Las Vegas, social media users found tweets containing the N-word linked to an account with Hay’s name.

A screenshot of the four tweets from 2013 and 2014 has been making the rounds online.

Pageant officials, referencing an apology Hay posted to Twitter and Instagram, say the 18-year-old was going through personal struggles and regrets her words.

Hay, of Tomball, Texas, says she will use her platform to advocate for those affected by drug and alcohol abuse.

She’s 18, was 15 or 16 when she wrote them. Forgive and give her some compassion. Besides, she’s not running for president.

    • krusha says:

Yeah, after checking out the actual tweet, sounds like the N word is the ultimate curse word in her vocabulary.

    • primo1 says:

“She’s 18, was 15 or 16 when she wrote them.” Then she’s 21. Then she’s 30. At some point lessons need to be learned.

    • allie says:

No excuse for this. She needs to be removed. There is no room for what she did. Let her apologize and step down gracefully. Also, isn’t the beauty pageant owned by Miss Universe, a Trump sexist enterprise? Bad taste and cruelty seem to follow this anti-American candidate.

  2. sarge22 says:

Do young children know what the N-word is? At what age will the PC tell them?

    • Ikefromeli says:

16 years is not a young child.

      • klastri says:

So now we know he / she thinks the avoidance of that word is political correctness. Fits into the Trump supporter profile perfectly.

Mr. Trump, after all, has the white supremacist and racist vote all wrapped up.

        • laeboy says:

bahahahahahahahaha. I just fell off my chair! Donkey.

        • Ikefromeli says:

If you think avoiding the N word is a PC notion, then you have lost or never had a real sense of respect for Black people and people in general. Actually sad that this needs to be explained to an adult.

        • sarge22 says:

That makes Trump a sure winner if has both their votes plus the rest of us.. President Donald J Trump. I can’t hear you say it.

        • sarge22 says:

Does a four year old know what the N-word stands for? Didn’t mean to upset the PC folks. That’s my point. Should we outlaw the F-word also. calling the French “frogs” after their habit of eating frogs legs. Derogatory term used by Germans due to the quick collapse of France during WWI. Or the K-word..”Kraut” is a German word recorded in English from 1918 onwards as a derogatory term for a German, particularly a German soldier during World War I and World …Appears these words have just faded away as the N-word was until eight years ago.

        • Ikefromeli says:

Which the begs the question, in what household are folks frequently utilizing the N world? Perhaps that is what occurs in your family?

Two, as to the specific situation, we are talking about a 16 year old who was making public statements on social media. One could not use the N word, on the job , in church or any other public setting, so this is not really a hard social setting decorum to figure out.

Hey, but maybe in your house the word is flippantly thrown around without the sad and coarse history behind the word–good to know what kind of family you come from and how you feel justified in the usuage of one of the most vile words in the American lexicon–speaks very highly of you and your family, and how you view Black America….impressive.

        • kekelaward says:

The N word is used way more in black households than any other racial group.

And extremely much more when said household is listening to rap/hip hop music.

        • Ikefromeli says:

Artistic impression by black entertainers is one thing, it’s quite another to have a white female from the south, making inane comments using the N word on Twitter and other forms of social media. Like many racist expressions, it’s not until it becomes public does the become embarrassed.

But maybe we should talk to sarges family, where it appears four years on up, use this entirely vile word, but don’t self-monitor themselves, as that might be somehow PC.???

        • sarge22 says:

Time to move on. What difference does it really make. Why is Bill Cosby being prosecuted and not Bill Clinton for similar crimes? Now there is something racist to talk about.

        • Ikefromeli says:

You just got stumped for the umpteenth time. You condone saying the N word for both infants and teens, then when called on it, you attempt to take a picot to entirely separate subject.

I can only imagine how both you and family talk in private and how you view minorities– don’t answer, that is apparent to all.

      • sarge22 says:

.You can’t be serious. I never said that “condone saying the N word for both infants and teens” I simply questioned if they knew what the word means. Even you should be able to understand that. Your imagination is running wild, cut down on the meds or it’s back to rehab.

      • sarge22 says:

Your imagination is running wild, cut down on the meds or it’s back to rehab.

    • Sandys says:

Yes they do. I was shocked when in 2nd grade students referred to the mom and pop store below Punahou as the Chink store

      • HanabataDays says:

Let’s see now, what time frame are you referring to? Because that store hasn’t existed for close to 30 years and even back in the early 60s we called it the “Ching” store, so we already knew the difference way back then.

  3. aiea7 says:

no matter how old, there is no excuse for racial tweets. don’t tell me that she does not know that racial slurs are not appropriate. another redneck from texas.

    • laeboy says:

“another redneck from texas”…The ole’ good for me but not for thee liberal dog poopoo! At least your very clear on your racists stance against Texans aiea7. Look hard in the mirror you’ll find a racist right in your own home. Give me a break you duplicitous double talker.

  4. NanakuliBoss says:

Racism is imbreded in the South.

  5. WalkoffBalk says:

    It’s Hip Hop music fault.

  6. HAJAA1 says:

Great picture to accompany your article, SA. Pfft.

  7. entrkn says:

    Unacceptable

  8. lokela says:

They say once a racist always a racist. She should not have been even considered for the crown.

    • Ikefromeli says:

Indeed. Apparently they are going to do a big pillow hat contest at Sarges house, a clan of them , where they spew this vile word for even nursery rhymes and little children—as correcting such base behavior is somehow PC?

    • calentura says:

Once a racist always a racist? Are you aware of WJClinton’s history of racial profiling and violations or the Voter Rights Act when he was governor of Arkansas? Probably not.

  9. kk808 says:

Many years ago I used the “N” word once; it was in anger towards this black guy in the army. He was also my best friend. He also tried to call me a racial slur but couldn’t remember “J_p.” His attempt was so funny we broke up laughing and apologized to each other. The incident actually strengthened our friendship.

  10. HanabataDays says:

Wouldn’t it be more appropriate if, instead of worrying about “drug and alcohol” abuse (alcohol is a drug), Li’l Missy advocated for racial tolerance and mutual understanding?

I mean, since she’s reformed her ways and all.

  11. oxtail01 says:

Is she related to the “fingering” Hawaii delegate (also from Texas)? Or did they both come from the same trailer?
