Man accused of attacking alleged church shooter out on bond

CHARLESTON, S.C. >> The man who authorities say attacked accused Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof in the jail shower is out on $100,000 bond.

Charleston County jail records show 26-year-old Dwayne Stafford was released after posting bond Friday night, more than 18 months after he was arrested on first-degree assault and strong armed robbery charges.

The records do not show who paid Stafford’s bond.

Authorities say Stafford ran down the steps from his cell Thursday morning and attacked Roof after his cell door was not locked as it was supposed to be. The jail is doing an internal investigation.

Roof’s face and back were bruised. He refused to press charges against Stafford.

Roof, who is white, is charged with killing nine black churchgoers in June 2015. Stafford is black.

This was an obvious setup and should be investigated evenhandedly without regard to skin color of either party. In particular, whoever was responsible for seeing to it that the cell door is properly locked ought to receive the appropriate sanction. The matter of who posts someone’s bond should always be available to inquirers.

We have no room for “jailhouse justice” in this country, regardless of how fitting we may imagine it to be in any particular case.

Such is life behind bars….this incident is only a small example compared to what he can expect after he is convicted and transferred from jail to prison where there will be an even larger inmate population to contend with….he wanted a race war….he is going to get his wish…only thing is he won’t have a gun to fight back….
