LIHUE » County health officials say a Kauai resident who recently traveled to the South Pacific contracted the Zika virus.

This is the 10th case of imported Zika in the state and the second travel-related case on Kauai. Health officials say Hawaii has no locally acquired Zika cases, and no mosquitoes are transmitting the disease in the state.

In announcing the recent case today, county health officials say the Kauai resident is past the point of being infectious to mosquitoes.

The mosquito-borne virus continues to spread in various regions across the world. Travel-related cases are expected to increase this year. Health officials advise travelers to prevent mosquito bites when they return from areas with mosquito-borne disease outbreaks.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends pregnant women not travel to Zika areas.

The Republican House of Representatives rejected an urgent appeal from the CDC for $1.9B in funding to control zika. Republicans decided it was more important to take a vacation, so they went home without taking any action.

Your finger should be blaming the World Health Organization (WHO) what were they doing when this problem was localized only to the South American Country of Brazil. Our CDC should have been at the forefront when they knew the carrier of this virus instead of bungling with their stockpile of some of the most dangerous microorganisms in various places where CDC operates. When you have unionized government workers, no one takes responsibilities, all they care about is how much pay raise they are going to get on their next labor contract negotiation.

That’s what happens when you visit Pacific Islands.

  3. Blunt says:

I Googled the question if a Zika virus infect imparts lifelong immunity after recovery. The answer is it is NOT known because of little research. Meanwhile I read that the vaccination trials are looking promising.

  4. dontbelieveinmyths says:

What’s more dangerous, GMOs on Kauai or someone with Zika? With all the noise about GMOs coming from Kauai, you would think people would be smarter than going to areas with the disease. Where are the protests? On another note, we should bring back DDT for this emergency situation. I’d be willing to sacrifice a few birds to combat the mosquitos.
