Police closed Kailua-bound traffic on the Pali Highway from Kamehameha Highway to Kapaa Quarry Road this afternoon because of a critical accident.

A 68-year-old Waimanalo woman died this afternoon after suffering injuries in a traffic accident in Kailua.

The crash occurred at 11:50 a.m. on Kalanianaole Highway near the Kapaa Quarry Road.

The woman was driving the vehicle toward Kailua on Kalanianaole Highway when it veered from the left lane across the right lane and struck a guardrail, where it overturned, ejecting her, Honolulu police said.

The woman was taken in extremely critical condition to Castle Memorial Medical Center, where she later died.

Police said speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the incident.

The death of the woman, who was not wearing a seat belt, was the 33rd fatality this year, compared to 31 for the same period last year.

The crash caused police to close Kailua-bound traffic on the highway from Kamehameha Highway to Kapaa Quarry Road.

All lanes on Kalanianaole Highway were reopened by 2:38 p.m.

What I saw as I came across the seen: her van on its side, front tire still spinning, debris field that went across to the town bound lanes.
She was laying there, but not alone.
A wonderful woman was with her placing a blanket about her to comfort her.
A young man was trying to remove the smashed windshield maybe to help others get out. 2 other people beside her for assistance. She seemed to be unresponsive. But not alone… as she lay there.
It as traumatic to see, I cried inside.
I was relieved to see so many wonderful people there to help her. I think alot of people there wanted to hold her hand so she would know at some level she was being cared for.
