Pebble was stolenTuesday along with a pitbull mix named Punu after a man had a “meet and greet” with Punu.

A Honolulu Police Department officer this morning spotted a man at McKinley High School with a small black dog that turned out to be the terrier mix taken from the Humane Society adoption shelter last week.

The man was arrested, according to a press release from the Humane Society.

After the HPD officer recognized the dog, Pebble, she was taken to the shelter where a microchip scan confirmed her identity. Pebble was stolen Tuesday along with a pitbull mix named Punu after a man had a “meet and greet” with Punu.

Punu was located Thursday after a tip led to the arrest of a man who was found with the pitbull mix near Royal Elementary School on Queen Emma Street.

Pebble is about 3 years old, and Punu is 2 to 4 years old.

Dog reported stolen, cop spots man with dog, man arrested.

Car reported stolen, cop spots man inside car, man goes free.

What the heck is wrong with this place?

    • inverse says:

That is true. In an interview Keith Kaneshiro, he blamed a Hawaii State Supreme court ruling for not being able to prosecute car thieves. Some California attorney and Peter Carlisle said Kaneshiro is making up B S stories. Who is correct?

      • GSR808 says:

        Steal cars not dogs
Don’t steal cars with dogs inside

      • inlanikai says:

So the guy who stole the dog should claim the same defense that protected the guy who stole the car.

        • dragoninwater says:

If the SUSPECT that was arrested with Pebbles wasn’t at the animal shelter on the day the dog went missing, they will likely throw the case out since there will not be any evidence that he stole the dog. Likely he will claim that he obtained the dog on Craigslist or some other means from the real dog thief.

    • tho808 says:

give your car a name, when stolen, thief can be prosecuted.

  2. wahine808 says:

People take dogs from the shelter to give them a home and then they get arrested? What am I missing…?

  3. HanabataDays says:

Ooh, black poi dog, looks mighty yummy.

  4. kiragirl says:

The good news is that the dog is safe. Person could have done bad things to the dog. God work HPD.

    • dragoninwater says:

Bad things like what? Walk him at the park or by the elementary school? Given the state facts in the article the dog seemed better off with the dog napper than in a cage at an animal shelter. The only crime that anyone is being charged with is not paying the animal shelter the adoption fee.

This is excellent work by the HPD officer. I only wish you had published their name and photo. This is the sort of detailed, community level policing that restores the public’s faith in our HPD.

    Thank you officer!!!

  6. Tita Girl says:

Great work HPD. Now, perhaps HHS should adjust their “meet an greet” policy by requiring an I.D. prior to being left alone with any of the animals.

  7. WizardOfMoa says:

Refreshing news! Cute and pleasant to see Pebble’s photo and the read the outcome of this story! Unlike the Presidential debate that left a bit of indigest and a unhappy disposition. At this moment in time, Pebbles would make a better Presidential Candidate! 🙂

    THIS IS TOP NEWS??? Yawn!

    • dragoninwater says:

They have nothing better to do.

      HPD daily task list:

      Day 1…
      1. Catch violent criminals that stab and shoot others.
      2. Issue citations for jay walking
      3. Look into petty crimes like dog nappings or chiefs stolen mailbox.
      4. Release violent criminals identified under line 1 because incompetent prosecutor is too busy with chiefs stolen mailbox issues and petty dog napping crimes.

      Day 2 through day 7…
      Repeat lines 1 – 4 from day 1.

I’d sure like to know the name of that nice officer. I’ve got a stolen-pet case with detective assigned (or I HAD one) at HPD and the det. is acting like he’s got better things to do and basically he intends to do nothing.
