UH soccer loses Big West opener
Despite outshooting its opponent by a considerable margin, the Hawaii soccer team came up short in its Big West Conference opener on the mainland tonight, falling 2-1 at Cal Poly.
Cal Poly scored on a counterattack to go ahead in the 69th minute, overcoming Raisa Strom-Okimoto’s first-half score and a 20-9 advantage in shots by the Rainbow Wahine at the Mustangs’ stadium in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Strom-Okimoto had nine shots herself. Her 33rd-minute blast was her team-best fifth goal of the season, tying it up 1-1 after Cal Poly put in a 17th-minute penalty kick.
UH (7-2-1, 0-1 BWC) continues play Sunday at UC Santa Barbara (9-1-1), which was off today.
