Hiker survives 150-foot fall near Kauai waterfall
An 18-year-old Oahu woman survived a 150-foot fall with only cuts and bruises while hiking near Wailua Falls, the Kauai Fire Department said today.
The woman, an exchange student, was hiking on an unestablished trail when she fell at about 12:25 p.m. Tuesday, the fire department said in a news release.
Rescue workers initially couldn’t locate the woman in the forest reserve. The man who called for help after seeing the woman fall, hiked with rescuers down the trail to the woman on the Lihue side of the river.
Firefighters picked her up in a helicopter and flew her to a nearby landing zone, and paramedics took her to Wilcox Hospital for treatment of minor scrapes and abrasions.
Police closed part of Maalo Road between mile-marker 3 and the end of the road for about an hour for the rescue.
Police, firefighters, and personnel from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources responded to the incident.

Good news and very fortunate. Hiking on “an unestablished trail” probably added to her fall.
Oops! Forgot my parachute – – –
She really owes the Big Man – – – !
Most trails on O`ahu are unestablished trails. That doesn’t make them dangerous, just not maintained by the State.
ok
Not true. I hike a lot. All trails I do are official trails. You see the state of Hawaii marker at the trailhead.
This happened on Kauai.
Impetuous teenager exposing self to unknown dangers by hiking alone on an unmarked trail. Luckily she escaped with minor injurious. Karma, perhaps! More to another visitor witnessed the tragic drama unfolding!
Unestablished trails are the only ones worth hiking these days, no thanks to the internet and its first-hand accounts of hiking all the established ones, that draw flocks of visitors and wreck the experience.
I think we all know it was Trump that saved her on this fall
Wow! 150 foot fall. I fell off a step ladder and hurt myself. She is one lucky girl. God is good.
