No tsunami threat to Hawaii after 2 more quakes in Solomon Islands
Two strong earthquakes off of Kirakira in the Solomon Islands — the same area as yesterday’s 7.7-magnitude temblor — does not pose tsunami threats to Hawaii.
The first quake, measuring in at a preliminary 6.9, struck at 9:10 a.m. Hawaii time, 56.2 miles west-southwest of Kirakira at a depth of 6.2 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The second quake, measuring in at a preliminary magnitude 6.1, struck at 11:38 a.m., 48.7 miles southwest of Kirakira at a depth of 8.7 miles.
“A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin after the first quake. The PTWC did not issue a bulletin after the second quake.
No serious injuries were immediately reported.
