Protesters demonstrated ahead of Pennsylvania’s 58th Electoral College at the state Capitol in Harrisburg, Pa. today. The demonstrators were waving signs and chanting in freezing temperatures this morning as delegates began arriving at the state Capitol to cast the state’s electoral votes for president.

Rex Teter, a member of the Electoral College, held two days of delivered mail at his home in Pasadena, Texas on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON >> There were many protesters but few faithless electors as Donald Trump won the Electoral College vote today — ensuring that the billionaire will become America’s 45th president.

An effort by anti-Trump forces to persuade Republican electors to abandon the president-elect came to practically nothing and the process unfolded largely according to its traditions. Trump’s polarizing victory Nov. 8 and the fact Democrat Hillary Clinton had won the national popular vote had stirred an intense lobbying effort, but to no avail.

Even one of Trump’s fiercest Republican rivals, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, said it was time to get behind the president-elect.

“We want unity, we want love,” Kasich said as Ohio’s electors voted to back Trump at a statehouse ceremony. Kasich refused to endorse or even vote for Trump in the election.

With several states still voting, Trump had 304 votes and Clinton had 169. It takes 270 Electoral College votes to win the presidency. Texas put Trump over the top, despite two Republican electors casting protest votes.

Befitting an election filled with acrimony, thousands of protesters converged on state capitols across the country today, urging Republican electors to abandon their party’s winning candidate.

More than 200 demonstrators braved freezing temperatures at Pennsylvania’s capitol, chanting, “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA!” and “No treason, no Trump!”

In Madison, Wisconsin, protesters shouted, cried and sang “Silent Night.” In Augusta, Maine, they banged on drums and held signs that said, “Don’t let Putin Pick Our President,” referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Despite the noise outside state Capitols, inside, the voting went pretty much as planned.

In Nashville, Tennessee, one audience member tried to read out some Scripture before the ballots were cast, but was told he could not speak.

“We certainly appreciate the Scripture,” State Election Coordinator Mark Goins said from the podium. “The answer is no.”

With all Republican states reporting, Trump only lost the two electors in Texas. Clinton lost four electors in Washington state — three voted for former Secretary of State Colin Powell and one voted for Native American tribal leader Faith Spotted Eagle.

Several Democratic electors in other states tried to vote for protest candidates but they either changed their votes to Clinton or were replaced.

The Electoral College has 538 members, with the number allocated to each state based on how many representatives it has in the House plus one for each senator. The District of Columbia gets three, despite the fact that the home to Congress has no vote in Congress.

Republican electors were deluged with emails, phone calls and letters urging them not to support Trump. Many of the emails are part of coordinated campaigns.

In Atlanta, Gov. Nathan Deal empathized with GOP electors.

“I, too, regret that you have been the subject of harassment by those who perhaps are not as dedicated to the proposition of what this body is supposed to do as they are agitated by the fact that the people didn’t do what they wanted them to do,” Deal told the state’s 16 electors, who all voted for Trump.

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, elector Charlie Buckels reached out to Trump’s opponents after the New York businessman got all of the state’s eight votes.

“For those of you who wished it had gone another way, I thank you for being here,” said Buckels, the state GOP finance chairman. “I thank you for your passion for our country.”

There is no constitutional provision or federal law that requires electors to vote for the candidate who won their state — though some states require their electors to vote for the winning candidate.

Those laws, however, are rarely tested. More than 99 percent of electors through U.S. history have voted for the candidate who won their state. Of those who refused, none has ever been prosecuted, according to the National Archives.

Some Democrats have argued that the Electoral College is undemocratic because it gives more weight to less populated states. That is how Clinton, who got more than 2.8 million more votes nationwide, lost the election to Trump.

Some have also tried to dissuade Trump voters by arguing that he is unsuited to the job. Others cite the CIA’s assessment that Russia engaged in computer hacking to sway the election in favor of the Republican.

“When the founders of our country created (the Electoral College) 200-plus years ago, they didn’t have confidence in the average white man who had property, because that’s who got to vote,” said Shawn Terris, a Democratic elector from Ventura, California. “It just seems so undemocratic to me that people other than the voters get to choose who leads the country.”

A joint session of Congress is scheduled for Jan. 6 to certify the results of the Electoral College vote, with Vice President Joe Biden presiding as president of the Senate. Once the result is certified, the winner — almost certainly Trump — will be sworn in on Jan. 20.

Associated Press writers Julie Carr Smyth in Columbus, Ohio, Marc Levy in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Scott Bauer in Madison, Wisconsin, Erik Schelzig and Jonathan Mattise in Nashville, Tennessee, Kathleen Floody and Alex Sanz in Atlanta, Melinda Deslatte in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Marina Villeneuve reported from Augusta, Maine, and Juliet A. Williams in Sacramento, California, contributed to this report.

    • allie says:

Sadly the electors will not have the advantage of seeing the classified documents from intelligence agencies, nor will they see the complete report which may tie Trump to treasonous cooperation with the Russian efforts. IN any case, Trump is in no way legitimate and he is not up to the job. He is unstable, moronic, and a walking joke. He is fine as an entertainer. Not more. Be prepared to suffer horribly over the next 4 years

      • Tarball says:

Been suffering horribly these past eight years. I voted Obama . . . ..sorry I did

        • droid says:

No one can fault you for putting your faith in a keiki ‘o ka ‘aina. Unfortunately, President Obama has demonstrated his incompetence, temperament (or lack thereof) and indecisiveness across the board. As a result more Americans despise government, more foreign countries despise the U.S., more long-term unemployed citizens have been forgotten and more foreign leaders no longer respect U.S. democracy. In addition, we are nearly $20 trillion in debt (more debt than any country in the history of the world) with virtually nothing to show for it — and an American hero has CHOSEN to seek asylum in Russia for fear of persecution by the Obama Administration.

Hope and change? Dreams from his fathe®, never realized.

        • Vector says:

Well, you are going to really know what suffering is like under Trump. The rich will get richer. Trillions of your tax dollars will go to to support the ravenous beast of the military industrial complex. Your civil rights will be eroded, if not destroyed. The fossil fuel tycoons will head the energy and environmental departments, and increase their profits while selling their Russian and American oil and gas, and hiding that wealth in off-shore accounts in the Bahamas, where they cannot be taxed. All the corporate billionaires will be taxed way less than you, and public and social services will be reduced. And we will be friends with Putin and all the other dictators in the world

      • Windward_Side says:

Unless you show some evidence to substantiate your statements, you’re just another liberal trying to divide the country by spreading more rumors. All you have is hearsay.

        • klastri says:

It’s not hearsay that Mr. Trump is profoundly mentally ill. That should be obvious to everyone by now.

        • meat says:

You Deomcrapic losers are “mentally ill”. Trumps wins 2nd term. Get used to it. Better yet, don’t get used to it and wallow in your sorrow for 8 years. Scrubs.

        • Vector says:

Trump, not only mentally ill, also has fragile and megalo-maniacal ego whenever he is criticized, whether by individuals, the press or the media. He wants to destroy the First Ammendment and freedom of speech and the press.

      • Pocho says:

Reads like you “seen” the documents! lol. You are no different than Barry, judging things before the facts are out. Barry, Al, Jesse, Fredricka, etc. learned their lessons, but you… . lol,

        • allie says:

I am just saying we should delay this vote until the full documents are released. We don’t have the facts. Did Trump commit major treason? How is he tied to organized crime in Russia and why is acting so weird about his finances and taxes? Let was wait until we know what happened.

        • Windward_Side says:

Allie…the POTUS knew about the hacking well before the elections. Why do you want them to start an investigation now. Ask Obama why he didn’t do it then. He’s over in Kailua. Go ask him.

        • Keonigohan says:

          @ allie..
“Did Trump commit major treason? How is he tied to organized crime in Russia and why is acting so weird about his finances and taxes?”

          WOW! you ok?

Bottom line is WikiLeaks exposed the TRUTH about hiLIARy and the Democrats…that’s all that really matters.

          Get over it!

        • hawaiikone says:

allie, weren’t you one of the many calling Trump a child rapist based on those charges from a 13 yr old? The charges that were dropped, then re filed, then dropped again? The same charges that were supposed to have undergone a status hearing 3 days ago? Seems strange I can’t find any information on that. Sounds like the entire episode was initiated as just another smear effort.
Now you’re calling for us to delay indefinitely our process based on some other unsubstantiated claims.
I don’t care for Trump, didn’t vote for him, but he’s got the job. As Americans, we have the responsibility to support that fact. We also have a duty to challenge anything he does officially that violates the constitutional limitations he must operate within, and it already appears there’s an abundance of legal minds ready and willing to do just that.

        • Keonigohan says:

        • droid says:

They could truly make their vote meaningful by voting for Bernie Sanders. The primary results prove that is who the majority of Hawai‘i voters really wanted, so let the Electoral College vote reflect that.

        • beachbum11 says:

I agree. Keep a eye on Tulsi. Like father

        • Bumby says:

When an American voter cast their vote for their candidate, they are choosing electors and telling them whom they should vote for in the Electoral College. Thus by an oath taken by the electors they are bound to follow the popular vote of their respective county and or state. Not following this oath is not breaking any law. These electors should they deviate from their popular vote majority made by the people of their county or state will be doing their voters, an injustice for what is believed or had been agreed upon since the late 1700’s.

If the electoral votes can be changed or voted upon by the electoral college representative’s bias feelings, there would be no need to have the American people cast their votes for their presidential candidate.

Thus stop griping and crying, and if you want this to change have our lawmakers in Washington do so for all future presidential elections. If people were to study why our fore fathers put such things in place you would find the majority to agree and not have this voting procedure changed. Again let the lawmakers decide during their next session.

Trump is now the 5th president to be elected who did not win the popular vote.

So because Hillary decided to put the country at risk and use her own private server to make deals for the foundation, it’s now Trumps fault that the emails got into the hands of some bad players. and it was Trumps fault that they set up Bernie and screwed him in the Primary. Hillary still could face penalties for her actions while she was secretary of state. This is the real world. No participation trophies. The sixties are over. No more whining. No more gravy train

        • 3ocean3000 says:

Hillary is not going to face any penalties and your Predident-elect has countermanded his promise to prosecute her if he should become president. Ya know why- because there’s nothing to prosecute and that’s been proven time and time again. The larger problem to me is how Trump and his billionaire buddies are going to deregulate everything and steal from Social Security and Medicaid to rape this country and enrich themselves any way they can for the next four years- just like GW did. Make America great again my butt.

        • berrygood says:

          It’s not his call.

      • menloboy says:

All this stuff about Trump> There was one candidate who was, and still is, under Federal investigation and yet not one Democrat has ever stood up against Clinton! Allie, you many very well be right, then again, you may be entirely wrong. Nobody knows YET. Let’s give the guy a chance. We live in a world today that has it’s moral and ethical guidelines twisted. Too much greed, as evidenced by Hillary and the pharma’s, yet I did not hear you breathe one word about how bad Hillary is in retrospect to Trump. As much as Trump may be all those characteristics you’d mentioned, I also believe much of his bravado was meant purely for the political race and trying to rile up the country and utilize emotion. Well, it worked! Bottom line, he may not be all that people are making him out to be. Maybe what we need is the unorthodox and the not same political agenda that we’ve seen over the last 2 decades.
        Let’s see what he does.

Whatever happens, it will bring clarity to many of the issues of running our government. Trump, right or wrong, is already bringing clarity to how the government is charged for such things as building Air Force One. Trump will be criticized by Democrats for almost everything he does so hopefully, all the wrong things in government will be exposed and changes will be made. I think this is what most people who voted for Trump was hoping for…change.

      • dontbelieveinmyths says:

Stop listening to fake news. Haven’t you learned from the general election and how deceitful the media was and still is.

      • Ronin006 says:

Allie, you seem not to know or do not care that we have a document in this country called the Constitution of the United States which specifies the three qualifications for President and procedures for electing the president. You say “Trump is in no way legitimate.” Please tell me and other readers which provisions of the Constitution Trump does not meet that makes him in no way legitimate.

      • beachbum11 says:

You Allie should move to Washington DC that way you can close Mr. and Mrs. O.

      • cajaybird says:

allie, Trump isn’t up for the job? Really? Hillary could barely make it through the campaign. Trump has already restored “hope” and he isn’t in office.

      • kvlogic says:

Hard to believe Hillary the Great couldn’t beat Donald the Dope … Guess she wasn’t so great after all.

    • allie says:

We knew the results last week hon. But no, Trump lacks the moral qualities we demand in our President. He scares many of us who love America. Many are beginning to realize how much they were duped by this entertainer.

      • South76 says:

And you believe Hillary has the moral clarity to lead this nation? You need to stop reading those fake news from your Facebook feed. Wow, your moral compass is out of whack, you need to check in to a hospital to get your brain checked.

      • Ronin006 says:

Allie, who’s “we” and what are the moral qualities being demanded? Is it gay marriage, rampant killing of unborn children under the guise of women’s health, open borders, amnesty for people here illegally, transgenders being allowed to use restrooms opposite their biological sex, burning the American flag, not standing and respecting our National Anthem and placing a crucifix in a jar of urine and calling it art? Please reply.

      • cajaybird says:

So allie, do you believe Hillary has the moral qualities? You’ve been studying too much.

    • Vector says:

Trump wants to assist Putin and Assad with the on-going GENOCIDE in Syria. 400,000 Syrians massacred, and even more as refugees trying to escape the carnage and destruction. And there is no place in Trump’s AmeriKKKa for refugees.

“Democrat Hillary Clinton had won the national popular vote”

      No such vote was taken.

The Presidential election is decided by state-wide popular votes, of which Trump won 30 and Hillary 20.
This is combined with several other state-based factors to determine the winner.

Implying that Hillary won the national vote, so she should be President, is like saying our basketball team won the game, if you ignore the 3-point line.

      • jusris says:

What does the 3 point line have to do with winning the basketball game???

Example: if a team has a 50% field goal and shoots ONLY 2 point field goals while the other team also shoots 50% field goals, but, only shoots 3 pointers AND each team shoots a total of 20 shots, the team that shoots 3 pointers will win the game by 10 points-BECAUSE OF THE 3 POINT LINE>

    • South76 says:

The result is in, she had more defectors than electoral electors defector for Trump, so much for the efforts of the bleeding heart libs e-mailing Trump electoral electors to defect. Two years ago, it appeared she had the WH in the bag, but she wrapped/caught herself with controversy after controversy and with a challenge from a socialist, she let that WH slipped out of her reach. She lost the election because of her actions or inactions and not from Russian hacking.

Apparently no one bothered to tell Hillary as well, despite the fact that it’s been that way for 240 years. It seems that Trump understood this and conducted his campaign to win electoral votes, not necessarily the popular vote. I do agree that if he committed treason he should be prosecuted. Maybe he can get the cell next to Hillary.

Which electors are you referring to? Currently electors are voted in by citizens, like us, during the November election. Each party puts up their slate of electors and, depending on the State, electors are selected. Some States are winner takes all some by district some are apportioned. The number of electors is based on the number of each State’s congressional delegation, plus three from DC.

Its just the sign of the times. Now, if you don’t like a result you keep going until something works. It reminds me of bill paying time as a newly wed. We, painted the ceiling others had a bowl on the ground. Anyway we threw the bills to the ceiling and whatever stuck we paid. What ha this got to do with the election process, nothing! You live with what you got! And make it work!

  15. ALLU says:

Just remember one thing, folks. Melania = HAWT!

    • CEI says:

Amen to that brother. Can you imagine having to look at Waldo’s baggy eyes for the next 4 years? Yikes! The first lady elect is a beautiful and classy woman. In addition she doesn’t seem to carry a lot of anger around with her like a certain first lady who will remain nameless.

      • Tita Girl says:

The message was lost when the Millionaire a.k.a. She Who Shall Remain Nameless went whining to the Billionaire a.k.a the perpetual dieter. But it was good for a laugh.

      • ALLU says:

The question now is– will we see a “First Lady Swimsuit Calendar” anytime soon? Yes, I know she’s married but you can look at the menu. You don’t have to order anything!

  18. latenightroach says:

All those pictures of these protesters that I see on the news…Young adults too young to have lived through or been aware of the Clinton’s scandals in politics & personal lives over the decades. They have no clue about the past and no way to prove that she would be better than Trump as POTUS. None whatsoever.

  19. st1d says:

finally, the end of the 2016 presidential election.

    next up, jan.20,2017:

“i, donald trump, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the united states, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the united states.”

    then,:

    “the defendant will please rise.”
“we, the jury, find the defendant guilty on all counts.”
“the court sentences you to five years imprisonment, or, five years of community service as chamber maid in the white house.”

  20. Ronin006 says:

A few days before the election, Democrats were outraged by Trump’s refusal to say if he would accept the results of the election. Clinton, Obama and other leading Democrats said Trumps refusal to say he would accept the results of the election was a direct attack on our democracy. Democrats were stunned by Trump’s victory over Clinton and many have refused to accept it. They have protested, even rioted, demanded recounts in several states, and have harassed and threatened electors to not vote for Trump. It is crystal clear that the real war against our democracy is being waged by Democrats.

  21. Bumby says:

When will Hillary backers become satisfied about she losing the presidential election?

    1) When she is found guilty of treason?

    2) When the Clinton foundation is found to be a scam?

    3) When the people around her are found to have been in collusion about the email scandals?

    • MoiLee says:

#Lock…. Her…. Up! Satisfied Liberals? Eh Bumby, maybe NEVER? They’ll never be satisfied,”it’s in their DNA”.
After all this Shenanigans? You know President Elect Trump will now want to Lock her up even more! But do you think the Left and the Left Stream Media will finally see the light or all the evidence that will be brought forth? Nope I don’t think so.
      Quotation of the Day:
“Save America, & Convert a Liberal Today”.

  22. MoiLee says:

…..so how many time has Hillary Lost the election ? Let’s count, 1,2 or 3 Times? I say 3 times! Man this has got to hurt Big league! Trump loses 2 electors and Hillary loses 4? Man!This is really telling you something, that the People don’t like both of them, but more dislikes Hillary. C’mon aunty! Concede to president Elect Trump and Be a Big Girl about it! You did it once, you can do it again.
I said it this morning before getting “Moderated” again, that The Democrats and the rest of the Looney Toon squad were all making Fools of themselves………..Moi Lee proves to be Right Again. IMUA

  24. willman says:

Having so much fun watching all the anti trump cupcakes cry and throw temper tantrums over Trumps victory. Still waiting for all of Clinton’s supporters that swore that they would leave the country if Trump won to leave. Just like Clinton they don’t really mean what they say. Look forward to eight years of Donald Trump. America will be back. No more kissing
up to the Saudi’s snd other Arab nations. I hope that they know that they are on notice.

    • mijlive says:

I know this may seem small, and petty-but I can’t help myself–can we compile a list of all the celebrities that threatened to move if ” PRESIDENT TRUMP” was elected they would leave the U.S.? And ,if so-can we get a scheduled departure date?

    • 3ocean3000 says:

Yeah, let’s show those Saudis, Muslims, Chinese, etc. just how tough we are. Just lob some nukes in there and that will take care of ’em! No, better yet, let’s send 250,000 troops wherever and fight a war we can’t win. Nothing like war to stimulate an economy. Just ask Cheney and Halliburton… Yeah, we’re gonna get those bad guys with some good old American whoop ass because that’s what’s really been lacking in this country- that’s gonna make us great again!

  25. cajaybird says:

    Another biased AP article.

  26. Dai says:

Take it easy peeps. Trump said the election was rigged. This is called transparency.

  27. Jerry_D says:

“Several Democratic electors in other states tried to vote for protest candidates but they either changed their votes to Clinton or were replaced.” WHAT?????? (Either replaced or KILLED by Clinton).

  28. ALLU says:

(Forrest Gump voice) “And….just like that– the hottest woman to ever hold the title of “First Lady” ascended the throne.”

  29. fstop says:

“Some Democrats have argued that the Electoral College is undemocratic because it gives more weight to less populated states. That is how Clinton, who got more than 2.8 million more votes nationwide, lost the election to Trump.”

The Senate is even more undemocratic. Hawaii has the same number of senators as California. This is because the US is a Republic, not a Democracy. “And to the Republic for which it stands, one nation…”
