The state Judicial Selection Commission has forwarded the names of six nominees to Gov. David Ige for the Intermediate Court of Appeals.

Ige will interview the nominees and select a replacement by Feb. 3 for a vacancy in the court with the Dec. 30 retirement of former Associate Judge Daniel R. Foley.

Ige’s appointment will be subject to senate confirmation.

The commission submitted the following names to the governor on Jan. 4:

>>Derrick H.M. Chan, Chief Judge of the First Circuit, State of Hawai‘i

>>David M. Forman, Director, Environmental Law Program, William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa

>>Keith K. Hiraoka, Attorney, partner, Roeca Luria Hiraoka LLC, and Ige’s former campaign manager.

>>Geoffrey K.S. Komeya, Attorney/shareholder, Cronin, Fried, Sekiya, Kekina & Fairbanks, Attorneys at Law, a Law Corporation

>>Karen T. Nakasone, Circuit Judge, First Circuit, State of Hawai‘i

>>John M. Tonaki, Public Defender, State of Hawai‘i

“I thank the Judicial Selection Commission for its hard work in screening and selecting qualified nominees for the Intermediate Court of Appeals. I have received the names and will be interviewing each nominee in addition to seeking public comment before making my decision,” Ige said in a press release.

Public comments on the nominees can be submitted on the governor’s website at governor.hawaii.gov

  • None of the nominees strike me as being notable in the judicial sense. Maybe it is the best they could field. Most are already employed by the state or connected in some way
but I guess that is the way it is in such a small state.

  • His former campaign manager, really?!?!? I voted for Ige for over 27 years and for Governor too. He has disappointed me so much with his wishy washy and no common sense actions. Handling the DOE Superintendent situation, appointing 8 of 9 BOE Members and saying he has no influence on not retaining Matayoshi? Holding the Democratic Party line of committing to house 1,500 Syrian refugees; hello we have a homeless crisis here, how do you fund the refugees? Appointing the wrong & unqualified guy to head the DLNR; after so much opposition he does a 180 degree and distances himself from this no common sense appointment. Thought he was big picture, for he people and above politics for the most part; and now he nominates his former campaign manager?

In 2018, for the very 1st time I will not be able to support and vote for his re-election.

  • On another subject, someone with a lot of contact and close tie to the BOE indicated that his “on sabbatical VP wife, Mrs Ige” is orchestrating the ouster of Matayoshi.
