2 drownings reported on Big Isle

Hawaii island officials reported two drownings today.

The Hawaii County Fire Department said a 47-year-old woman drowned after being swept away by a flash flood in Ahualoa.

The Hawaii Police Department also took a man to Hilo Medical Center after he had been discovered on the ocean floor near Kehena Beach. The fire department classified the incident as a drowning.

The fire department responded to a swimmer in distress near Kehena Beach in Pahoa at 12:11 p.m. Officials said the swimmer was last seen face down and sinking near rocky point at the south end of the beach.

Officials said rescuers on jet skis retrieved the body. The jet-ski personnel discovered the body on the ocean floor in about 30 feet of water approximately 100 yards from where he was last seen.
