The Hawaii Police Department also took a man to Hilo Medical Center after he had been discovered on the ocean floor near Kehena Beach. The fire department classified the incident as a drowning.

The fire department responded to a swimmer in distress near Kehena Beach in Pahoa at 12:11 p.m. Officials said the swimmer was last seen face down and sinking near rocky point at the south end of the beach.
