Honolulu police diverted traffic from Kalanianaole Highway through the Sandy Beach parking area as firefighters battled a wildfire on the slopes of Koko Crater this afternoon.

The Koko Crater Equestrian Center was evacuated today because of a nearby brush fire. Horses and other animals from the stables were brought to the Kalama Valley Shopping Center grounds.

The Honolulu Fire Department’s helicopter prepared for takeoff before dropping water on a wildfire today on the slopes of Koko Crater. Kona winds sent the smoke inland, blanketing Kalama Valley.

HPD shuts down Kalanianaole highway in both directions near Sandy Beach due to a brush fire
Police closed Kalanianaole Highway this afternoon for a second brush fire near Sandy Beach.
At 2 p.m., the highway was closed in both directions and police were rerouting traffic through Sandy Beach and onto Kealahou Street, police said.
Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins said the fire started at about 12:35 p.m. and firefighters were trying to put it out at about 1:40 p.m.
A caller reported a large amount of smoke from the fire being blown into Kalama Valley.
At about 9 a.m., Honolulu police closed Kalanianaole Highway in both directions near Sandy Beach while firefighters attacked a brush fire near the beach park. That brush fire was extinguished at about 9:15 a.m., and police reopened the highway at about 11 a.m.
