Woman dies in single-car crash in Hilo
The driver in a single-vehicle crash in Hilo died Sunday night.
Police said her name has yet to be released pending notification of next of kin.
The crash occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Mauna Kea Access Road, approximately 1.2 miles from the visitor center.
Police said a 2001 Nissan sport utility vehicle was traveling on the access road when it “ran off the roadway and overturned several times.”
The driver was taken to Hilo Medical Center where she was pronounced dead just before 12:30 a.m. today.
Police said the passenger, a 35-year-old woman of Lyon, France, also was transported to the hospital and flown to Queen’s Medical Center in stable condition.

Mauna Kea Access Road was closed for several hours while police conducted an investigation. The roadway reopened at about 5 a.m.
Police said speed was involved in the crash.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
This is Hawaii island’s fifth traffic-related fatality, the same number of fatalities that occurred at this time last year.
