A 28-year-old male visitor was hospitalized with severe injuries after being bitten by a 12-foot tiger shark at Kekaha Beach today.

Shortly after 9 a.m., the man visiting from France was surfing at a popular spot called Davidson’s — approximately 100 yards from shore — when a tiger shark bit him, according to the Kauai Fire Department.

Kauai County spokeswoman Sarah Blane said the surfer suffered severe injuries to his lower right leg and was taken to Wilcox Medical Center in critical condition.

Lifeguards closed Kekaha Beach today and posted “shark sighted” signs. Officials are expected to reassess the water Saturday morning.
