Big Isle police kill man armed with crossbow

Hawaii Island police said an officer fatally shot a man Saturday afternoon in Papaaloa.

Police were responding to a disturbance at a residence at about 3:35 p.m. when they encountered the man, who was wielding a loaded crossbow. One officer fired multiple shots, killing the man, according to the Hawaii Police Department. The man’s name has not been released pending identification.

The department’s Criminal Investigations Section will conduct a criminal investigation into the shooting and the Office of Professional Standards will also head an administrative investigation.
