Victim in hit-and-run moped accident dies of injuries

A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and failing to render aid in the fatal hit-and-run crash. He was later released pending investigation.

A 32-year-old man died from injuries he sustained in a hit-and-run crash in the Ala Moana area.

Paul I. Andrews of Honolulu died May 29 of blunt impact to the head in the collision with a Volkswagen car two days earlier.

At about 12:05 a.m. on May 27, police said Andrews was traveling Diamond Head-bound on Kapiolani Boulevard on a moped when a Volkswagen operated by a 46-year-old man made a left turn onto Atkinson Drive, directly in the path of Andrews.

He was thrown from his moped in the collision. Police said he was taken to a hospital in critical condition where he died.

The Volkswagen driver fled the scene but police located him later that day.

Police arrested the 46-year-old man on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and failing to render aid.

He was released pending investigation.
