NOAA Fisheries has announced a photo contest to showcase Hawaiian monk seals in a photographic calendar, which will be available for 2018! Responsible seal photography is paramount and images that are taken unethically will be disqualified.

In celebration of 2017 as Year of the Monk Seal, NOAA Fisheries is promoting responsible wildlife viewing with its inaugural photo contest. Selected entries will be featured in a 2018 calendar showcasing the endangered marine mammals.

There are five categories: photos illustrating the coexistence of monk seals and fishermen, divers and beachgoers; threats to the animals, such as marine debris; monk seals in their natural setting and interacting naturally with sea turtles and other species; monk seals at Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument; and photos by professional photographers.

The contest is open to keiki with cameras, weekend hobbyists, professionals and NOAA Fisheries volunteers. Images taken within 50 feet of monk seals or showing animals that appear stressed or harassed by the photographer will be disqualified. The entry deadline is Sept. 15.
