2 separate house fires on Big Isle under investigation

Two unrelated house fires on Hawaii island destroyed one home and left another heavily damaged, although there were no injuries.

A house fire Sunday in the Volcano district was reported at 5:27 p.m. A total of 20 fire department personnel responded to the scene to find a large one-story home fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters were unable to salvage a BMW in an attached garage. The home and car were declared a total loss and firefighters were left to stand watch as the fire burned itself out.

Damage was estimated at $250,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A house fire Monday in Pahoa was called in shortly after 8 p.m. A total of 20 fire department personnel responded to the scene to find the one-story home fully engulfed in flames. However, firefighters extinguished the fire by 10 p.m.
