Search continues for missing Big Island fisherman
Big Island firefighters and the Coast Guard resumed their search today for a missing fisherman off of Waikapuna Bay.
Police said Shane Romena, 48, of Ocean View was fishing with his grandson Monday evening when Romena fell into the water while he attempted to fill a cooler with ocean water for live bait.
Romena’s grandson, 10, lost sight of him and immediately called 911. The fire department’s helicopter crews conducted a search along the shoreline to no avail.
Fire crews including dive teams and the Coast Guard’s MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and C-130 Hercules plane continued searching for Romena Tuesday until nightfall.
The Hawaii County Fire Department resumed its search today with crews conducting aerial and ground searches, said Battalion Chief Michael Hayashida.
Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Amanda Levasseur said a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and cutter Galveston Island patrol boat are assisting in the search.
