The body of a 54-year-old fisherman was found tonight in Haleiwa at Kaiaka Bay.

Beachgoers reported an unmanned kayak equipped with fishing gear was found adrift off Aweoweo Beach Park in Waialua, and was brought to shore.

A fisherman, who was last seen at 3:30 p.m. leaving Haleiwa Beach Park heading toward Kaena Point, failed to return to shore, said fire Capt. David Jenkins.

The Honolulu Fire Department and the Coast Guard responded at 7:11 p.m. and arrived on scene at 7:16 p.m.

Fire personnel searched the shoreline and found the missing fisherman at about 8:10 p.m. in near-shore waters at Kaiaka Bay.

He was unconscious, not breathing and without a pulse, HFD said in a news release.

He was transferred to Emergency Medical Services and pronounced dead at 8:56 p.m.
