Hilary still a Category 2 hurricane as Greg weakens further
Tropical Depression Greg crossed over into the Central Pacific overnight and continued to weaken, but only one of the two hurricanes behind it lost steam.
At 5 a.m., Tropical Depression Greg weighed in with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph. The storm is about 965 miles east of South Point on Hawaii island and moving west at 12 mph.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service said they expect Greg to become a remnant low later today.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Hilary remained a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. Moving west at 13 mph, Hilary is 475 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. Weather officials expect Hilary to continue on its current track, but to slow in speed and intensity over the next few days.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the storm’s center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles.
Irwin, however, did weaken to a tropical storm overnight, clocking in with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph. Moving west-southwest at 7 mph, Irwin is about 940 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.
