The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified today the fisherman who died Friday after being swept away by a wave as Matthew Mabida-Bridges, 30, of Honolulu.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine the exact cause of death.

Witnesses said Mabida-Bridges was fishing in shallow waters with a woman offshore of Kahala Hotel and Resort at about 12:30 p.m. Friday when a large wave knocked them down.

Hotel staff paddled out, brought both back to shore and performed CPR on Mabida-Bridges.

Emergency Medical Services personnel transported Mabida-Bridges to a hospital where he died, police said. The woman, who was awake, was taken to an emergency room in serious condition.
