Man, 69, found dead off of Punaluu

A 69-year-old man has died after he was found unresponsive in waters off of Punaluu.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Clifford Takesono of Pearl City. An autopsy will be performed today to determine the exact cause of death.

Sometime prior to 6:05 p.m. Tuesday, Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright said Takesono was diving alone in waters off of Punaluu when he became distressed.

A friend went looking for him and spotted him unresponsive in waters off of 53-103 Kamehameha Highway. He brought him to shore and yelled for help.

Enright said bystanders called 911. EMS responded and performed life-saving measures. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said there were no signs of foul play.
