Elevated bacteria levels detected at Honokowai Beach

The state Department of Health issued a water quality alert for Honokowai Beach on Maui today due to elevated bacteria levels detected during routine beach monitoring.

Levels of 137 per 100 milliliters of enterococci were detected at Honokowai Beach, higher than the threshold level of 130 per 100 milliliters.

The department’s clean water branch reminds people that swimming at beaches with pollution in the water may result in illness.
