High bacterial levels prompt warning for Kauai beach

The state issued a water advisory Wednesday afternoon for Kealia Beach Park on Kauai due to higher than normal bacteria levels.

The public is advised to stay out of the water at the site due to enterococci levels of 271 per 100 milliliters detected at the site during routine beach monitoring by the department’s clean water branch. The threshold level is 130 enterococci per 100 milliliters.

Children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are the most likely to develop illnesses or infections after coming into contact with polluted water, usually while swimming. The most common illness is gastroenteritis.
