A 49-year-old man who died in a two-vehicle crash in Hamakua over the weekend has been identified as Napoleon Higuera of Hilo.

Police responded to the crash just after 7:20 p.m. Saturday on Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Saddle Road. A 2001 Dodge Caravan operated by Higuera was traveling westbound on the highway near the 38-mile marker when the Dodge overtook vehicles and struck a 2015 Honda Fit traveling eastbound.

Higuera was transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the Honda driver, a 36-year-old Mountain View woman, was also transported to the hospital in critical condition.

This is the 27th traffic-related fatality on Hawaii island compared to 23 at the same time last year.
