Utility restores electricity to Maui customers

Maui Electric Company restored power to the majority of its remaining customers by 10 p.m. Tuesday after lightning damaged the electrical system across the Valley Isle early Tuesday morning.

Approximately 66,500 customers on Maui experienced a power outage. Crews worked to make repairs in phases, and brought about 34,000 customers back online in parts of Central, South and West Maui and parts of Upcountry Maui at 10 a.m., and to 43,000 customers by noon.

By 10 p.m. Tuesday, Maui Electric spokeswoman Shayna Decker said crews had restored power to a majority of the remaining 300 customers but were continuing to work on pockets of the Upcountry area and other reported individual homes. Customers in the Koali area of Hana, she said, were experiencing an extended outage and had been advised to plan for an overnight outage after a tree fell on power lines in the area around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Customers still experiencing an outage can contact Maui Electric at 871-7777.
