Removal of 79-foot boat from reef near Diamond Head ‘will take some time’
The U.S. Coast Guard continues its efforts to remove a 79-foot fishing boat stranded for more than four weeks on a reef off Kaimana Beach in Waikiki over Veterans Day weekend.
Resolve Marine Group is the newest contractor hired to remove the Pacific Paradise, with support from several other experts for the removal of the pollution threat, the Coast Guard said in a press release today.
Joining Resolve are a team made up of American Marine, Global Diving and Salvage, Pacific Environmental Corporation and the Coast Guard Marine Safety Center
“The combined experience of the team we have working this challenge is impressive and the effort they’ve put in to develop this wreck removal plan is significant,” said Capt. Michael Long, commander, Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. “This response is a dynamic and constantly evolving process with many factors to consider and it will take some time to complete. Modifications to the pollution removal plan and changes in timelines are possible, but we are committed to resolving this situation.”
The team continued planning and mobilization efforts today, and has replaced a “sorbent boom” aboard the vessel which is collecting oily water and fuel leeching from the engine room, the Coast Guard said. The removal of the pollution threat is expected to occur in phases and take several weeks to complete.
Prior efforts to remove the fishing boat, a U.S.-flagged vessel which ran aground just before midnight Oct. 10, have failed. Oceangoers, meanwhile, are asked to stay at least 500 yards away from the wreckage for their safety.
