Bruno Mars, Ho’okena, Josh Tatofi receive Grammy nominations
Hawaiian music will be represented at the 60th Grammy Awards by two recording artists. Receiving nominations in the Regional Roots Music Album category today were Ho‘okena for their album “Ho‘okena 3.0” and Josh Tatofi for his album “Pua Kiele.”
Nominations in 84 categories were announced today by The Recording Academy. Winners will be revealed at the Grammy Awards show Jan. 28 to be broadcast on CBS from Madison Square Garden in New York.
Hawaii-born Bruno Mars — whose first broadcast television special, “Bruno Mars: 24K Magic Live at the Apollo,” debuts at 9 p.m. Wednesday on KGMB — received six nominations, including Album of the Year for “24K Magic.”
Other nominees with Hawaii ties include Hawaii-born Bette Midler, the featured principal soloist on the new Broadway cast recording of “Hello, Dolly!” that’s up for best Musical Theater Album.
While it’s Lin-Manuel Miranda who wrote “How Far I’ll Go,” nominated in the Song Written for Visual Media category, it’s local girl Auli’i Cravalho’s voice listeners hear on the track. She’s also prominently featured throughout the album “Moana: The Songs,” nominated in the Compilation for Visual Media category.
And two reggae acts with strong Hawaii followings, J Boog and Common Kings, are in the running for best Reggae Album, as is recent Hawaii visitor Damian Marley.

TATOFI SAID he is “stoked” to be a Grammy finalist.
“It’s been a crazy morning. Words can’t explain, of course, what it means to be in this position but it’s just one of those great things that we feel blessed to have happen,” he said. “I’m glad that the music is being heard and being shared. That’s the most important thing.”
Tatofi won 2017 Na Hoku Hanohano awards for Male Vocalist of the Year and Island Music Album.
In contrast to relative newcomer Tatofi, Ho‘okena has been performing for 31 years and has two prior Grammy nominations, both in the now-defunct Hawaiian Music Album category. Nonetheless, founding member Horace Dudoit III expressed excitement about the Grammy nod and the chance to visit New York for the first time.
“It’s awesome to be on the final ballot even the third time,” said Dudoit, who plays 12-string guitar in the trio.
Whatever happens in New York, he added, Ho‘okena, whose other members are Chris Kamaka (bass) and Glen Smith (six-string guitar), will continue to promote traditional Hawaiian music.
“For 31 years we’ve been playing the music we love to play. That’s why we do it. It’s music we love.”
IN FEBRUARY, Kalani Pe’a of Maui became the first Hawaii-resident recording artist to win a Grammy in the Regional Roots category, which includes Native American, zydeco and Cajun music.
The Hawaiian Music Album category was eliminated in 2011 as part of an effort to streamline some of the smaller genre categories. Since then, Louisiana-based recording artists have dominated the Regional Roots category.
The other three Regional Roots finalists announced today are “Top of the Mountain” by Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers, “Kalenda” by the Lost Bayou Ramblers and “Miyo Kekisepa, Make A Stand (Live)” by the Canadian powwow and round dance drum and singing group Northern Cree.
OVERALL, the Grammy Awards embraced hip-hop and rhythm and blues in the top categories this year, with nominations that include several major nods each for Jay-Z, Mars, and Kendrick Lamar.
Jay-Z leads this year’s pack with eight nominations, while Lamar picked up seven, and Mars earned six. Gambino, the alter ego of Emmy-winning actor-director Donald Glover, netted five nominations, along with singer Khalid and producer-songwriter No I.D.
One of the year’s biggest hits, the remix version of Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” featuring Justin Bieber, has become the first non-English-language track to be nominated in both the song and record of the year categories.
Album of the year nominees are Jay-Z’s “4:44,” Gambino’s “Awaken, My Love!,” Lamar’s “Damn.,” Lorde’s “Melodrama” and Mars’ “24K Magic,” while the song of the year section includes “4:44,” Julia Michaels’ “Issues,” Logic with Alessia Cara and Khalid’s “1-800-273-8255,” Mars’ “That’s What I Like” and “Despacito.”
