Kauai rescuers are searching for a missing fisherman in waters off of Kalihiwai on the Garden Isle’s north shore.

The man was last seen Wednesday afternoon walking with his fishing gear in an area known as Dragon’s Breath, near Kalihiwai and Kauapea Beach, according to a preliminary report. At about 6 p.m., witnesses observed an unresponsive man in the water and called 911.

The Kauai Fire Department responded and conducted an air and sea search with Hanalei firefighters on personal watercraft and Rescue 3 specialists aboard Air 1, but had to suspend it about an hour later due to dangerous ocean conditions and loss of daylight.

The air and sea search resumed this morning, with help from the county’s Ocean Safety Bureau and the Kauai Police Department.

The identity of the missing fisherman has not yet been released.
