Hawaii Fire Department ends search for woman in Wailuku River

The Hawaii County Fire Department called off its search today for a missing woman who was swept away on Jan. 26 near Piihonua Falls during flash flooding of the Wailuku River.

The woman was hiking with a man above Piihonua Falls when they were both swept by quickly rising floodwaters of the Wailuku River.

The man made it to the riverbank, but lost contact with the woman.

Firefighters searched along the riverbank from Piihonua Bridge to Boiling Pots.

The fire department’s rescue helicopter conducted aerial surveys Sunday and today.

Fire personnel searched many hours by air and ground crews and dive teams.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family during this time,” the fire department said in a news release.
