No. 4 Brigham Young upsets No. 2 Hawaii

Storm Fa’agata-Tufuga put down 16 kills and tournament MVP Brenden Sander added 12 kills and three aces as No. 4 Brigham Young won the 24th Outrigger Resorts Invitational tonight with a 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 upset of No. 2 Hawaii at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Gabi Garcia Fernandez had five of the Cougars’ 11 aces. It was BYU’s third title in as many appearances, running its winning streak to 12 straight.

For the Rainbow Warriors (13-3), Stijn van Tilburg had 16 kills and Austin Matatia added 11 kills and a career-high five aces.

Joining Sander, van Tilburg and Matautia on the all-tournament team were Ryan Coenen of Lewis, Kevin Gear of Penn State, Garcia Fernandez of BYU and Hawaii’s Joe Worsley.

In the de facto third-place match, No. 8 Lewis held off a late charge from No. 11 Penn State for a 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22 win.
