Honolulu firefighters rescued two distressed hikers shortly before noon on Sunday near Haiku Stairs in Kaneohe.

The two hikers — a male and a female — were in an area to the left of the shuttered Haiku Stairs and reportedly were in a steep clearing where they did not want to move because they were concerned for their safety. The Honolulu Fire Department responded shortly after noon with 16 personnel, including its Air1 helicopter. Both hikers were transported to Kaneohe District Park at 1:19 p.m.

No injuries to the hikers were reported. The Honolulu Fire Department has responded to hikers in distress near Haiku Stairs 10 times over the past year. It is unknown whether the hikers were trying to get to Haiku Stairs, also known as “Stairway to Heaven,” which would be considered trespassing and comes with a fine of $1,000.
