5 displaced in Makaha duplex fire

Firefighters responded to a building fire at 84-158 Orange Street at around 1:45 p.m. today.

Upon arrival, crews found a single-story duplex with heavy smoke coming out of two units, C and D.

Five occupants from unit C escaped without injuries and used garden hoses to fight off the fire before crews arrived.

Unit D also housed five occupants, but they were not home at the time of the fire.

The fire was extinguished at 2:17 p.m. and no injuries were reported.

Fire damage is estimated at $150,000 to the structure and $20,000 to its contents. The damage was reported to be confined to unit D, most of it in the dining area. The Red Cross is assisting the five occupants in that unit.
