Firefighters rescue windblown kayaker off Big Island

Hawaii island firefighters rescued a kayaker today after powerful winds blew him out to sea.

Firefighters responded at about 10:40 a.m. and found the man some 2 miles offshore of Mahukona Park, being buffeted by strong winds, firefighters said.

Two fire helicopters responded, and one hovered over the kayaker until a firefighter on a personal watercraft reached him.

The firefighter towed the kayaker and his kayak back to Mahukona Harbor. No one was injured.
