Maui firefighters made three rescues throughout the Valley Isle on Sunday afternoon, due mostly to quickly-rising waters.

At about 12:21 p.m. Sunday, firefighters were dispatched to the blowhole area at Nakalele after a 34-year-old male visitor injured his left wrist and ankle in a fall. Rescue personnel hiked down to the injured male, treated his injuries and air-lifted him to awaiting medics.

After hiking to the area, firefighters found the nine Maui residents on the other side of the flowing stream who were unable to cross the bridge because it had been washed out. An Air 1 helicopter transported the nine residents to safety. No injuries were reported. and air-lifted all parties to safety.

At about 1:23 p.m., firefighters responded to another call of 14 residents and two visitors trapped by a quick-rising river at Kepaniwai Park in Iao Valley. They were airlifted to safety.

No injuries were reported for the incidents at Swinging Bridges or Iao Valley.
