Warning signs posted after small sewage spill in Ala Wai Canal

The state Health Department is warning the public to remain out of the Ala Wai Canal near Kahakai Drive due to an estimated 25 gallons of raw sewage that entered the waters there.

The department was notified of approximately 150 gallons of wastewater discharged from an apartment complex next door to the Hawai‘i Convention Center at 1848 Kahakai Dr., of which an estimated 25 gallons entered the canal. The spill occurred at about 8:22 a.m. today and was stopped at about 9:15 a.m.

Warning signs will be posted, and the public is advised to remain out of the waters until signs have been removed.

The Ala Wai Canal wastewater discharge is the second to occur in the last few days, following another spill on Friday from an overflowing manhole near 1260 Richard Lane. Approximately 1,125 gallons of raw wastewater went into Kahili Stream and Keehi Lagoon due to grease and pipe repair material that clogged a sewer pipe.

The pubic is also advised to stay out of Kalihi Stream and Keehi Lagoon until signs there have been taken down.
