Students invited to free Teen Health Camp Nov. 3
A Teen Health Camp that aims to give youngsters an engaging way to explore careers in health fields will be held Nov. 3 at the University of Hawaii’s Burns School of Medicine.
The free daylong camp is aimed especially at students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds or underrepresented ethnicities including Native Hawaiians, Filipinos and Pacific Islanders.
“Students who participate in Teen Health Camp will get to experience fun workshops taught by students who were once in their exact shoes,” said Dr. Kelley Withy, director of UH/Pacific Basin Area Health Education Center, which is hosting the camp. “We want youth from across the state to help us address our health-care worker shortage.”
Activities will range from treating wounds, putting in stitches and making casts to learning how diseases spread and how to choose nutritious foods.
The camp is open to students in grades six through 12. It runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., including lunch, on Nov. 3 at the Medical Education Building.
Applications are being accepted through Friday at www.ahec.hawaii.edu/teen-health-camp-hawaii/.
