Police arrest resident for suspicion of arson after fire destroys Waipio home
Police arrested a man on suspicion of arson after firefighters responded to a Waipio house fire that displaced seven residents today.
More than 35 firefighters battled the blaze that broke out at the 94-1047 Lumi St. residence about 6 a.m. Three people were home at the time of the fire.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Scot Seguirant said firefighters brought the fire under control at 6:30 a.m.
Two people sustained injuries when they escaped through a jalousie window.
Resident Thor Solmerin, 20, sustained scratches and bruises. His friend, a 20-year-old woman who he helped escape through the window, was taken to a hospital with undisclosed injuries.
Honolulu Fire Battalion Chief Robert Thurston said the home is a total loss.

The cause of the fire and a damage estimate has yet to be determined. But police arrested Solmerin’s cousin, a man in his early 20s who lives at the home, for suspicion of first-degree arson. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for burns to his legs.
Seven people live at the home and the American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
