Safeguard yourself against loneliness
Loneliness is real and is experienced by many. Research has shown loneliness peaks late in the 20s, mid-50s and late 80s. The art of cultivating a personal community that can safeguard you against loneliness is important to happiness.
These strategies will help:
1. Maintain your relationships by keeping in touch with people that you share a history with and make it a point to spend some time with them periodically.
2. Practice gratitude. Many studies show being appreciative can act as a buffer against feelings of loneliness.
3. Take classes at community centers and organizations that offer in-person learning where you can meet and interact with others.
Social media, work and obligations fill our lives with busy distractions that prevent us from having courage to seek out companionship in our personal lives. Dare to reach out, be vulnerable and connect in ways that are truly personal and meaningful.
