Big Island police looking for missing opihi picker

Hawaii County police are looking for a missing 58-year-old man who went to catch crab and pick opihi Saturday night along the shoreline in Kapaau.

Police identified the missing man as Charles Kanoe Reyes of Kapaau.

Police said he was last seen Saturday night when he went to the shore. Family members found his white Mazda Protege sedan Sunday morning parked at a gate at the north end of Union Mill Road. A trail past the gate leads to the shoreline.

Police recovered a backpack from a cliff above the rocky shoreline at the end of the trail, which family members identified as belonging to Reyes.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Officer Dayton Tagaca at 889-6540.
