Las Vegas Advisor: Caesars Palace showroom undergoing transformation

Caesars Palace hotel and casino in Las Vegas.

One of Las Vegas’ most renowned showrooms is closing, though only for a few months.

The Colosseum at Caesars Palace will close in July to undergo its first remodel since opening in 2003. The 4,400-seat theater will go dark after the last Reba McEntire and Brooks & Dunn show on July 6 and reopen for Rod Stewart on Sept. 18.

Seats, carpet, video screen and sound system will all be upgraded, VIP bottle service will be added, and a standing-room general admission section will be built in front of the stage.

Lucky Dragon sold: The shuttered Lucky Dragon Hotel-Casino, which closed in 2018 after less than a year in operation, has been sold. The new owner says it will reopen as a noncasino hotel under a different name. No timetable was disclosed.

Zippy’s in Vegas: Zippy’s, the 52-year-old Hawaii restaurant chain, has announced the location of its first mainland restaurant, in Las Vegas. The 7,000-square-foot restaurant and bakery, plus a 12,000-square-foot commercial kitchen, will be built on vacant land about 5 miles southwest of the Strip. Originally scheduled to open early this year, Zippy’s is now set to debut in 2020.

Fewer shows for Angel: Criss Angel’s “Mindfreak Live” at Planet Hollywood has canceled all 9:30 and 10 p.m. performances due to a condition affecting the illusionist’s shoulder. He’ll perform just five 7 p.m. shows per week, Wednesdays through Sundays, until further notice.

Question: Was the Las Vegas sports bettor who’s tearing up “Jeopardy!” well known before his success on the show?

Answer: James Holzhauer wasn’t exactly a household name in Las Vegas, though he was known in certain sports betting circles. He’s certainly known now. At this writing he’s won 14 consecutive “Jeopardy!” games with winnings in excess of $1 million. That will raise anyone’s profile.
