Medical Examiner releases cause of death of prison worker found in Halawa bathroom

    Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the death of a Halawa Correctional Facility employee Monday as a suicide.

Darwin Angelo M. Fernandez, 37, of Ewa Beach died from a stab wound to the chest.

He was found in the staff bathroom at the facility Monday. Fernandez was the cook supervisor for the staff dining hall at the facility’s medium security facility.

He had been employed with the Hawaii Department of Public Safety since November 2011.

He was scheduled to appear in Honolulu District Court Wednesday morning on charges of two counts of third-degree sex assault involving a girl younger than 14.

Fernandez was released May 2 after posting $30,000 bail.
