Maui tourist ignores lifeguards, suffers back injury

A 27-year-old male visitor who ignored warnings by Maui lifeguards injured his lower back Saturday at Makena Beach State Park, according to Maui County’s Department of Fire and Public Safety.

The tourist was injured by “a large shorebreak” after bodyboarding from the top of a wave that had an 8-foot face, Maui officials said today.

The spot is also known as Big Beach and Oneloa Beach.

After injuring himself, the man needed the help of lifeguards to get out of the water. Lifeguards then used spinal precautions and took the man to an ambulance.

Officials were called at 12:27 p.m. Saturday.

“The male was very apologetic and now realizes the danger when large shorebreaks are present,” Maui officials said in a news release today. “A larger than normal swell from the south was evident on Saturday.”
