It is with sadness that I learned about the recent arson of construction equipment at the Waimanalo Sherwood Forest (“Equipment torched amid conflict over Waimanalo park,” Star-Advertiser, May 24).
As a Waimanalo resident, I think it is absurd that dissidents against a project would take it out on an innocent party that was contracted by the city to perform work to beautify a park for our children. This is not the God’s country I know and grew up in — Waimanalo is a very special place with character and grace like no other.
While many in our community disagree with the buildout of Sherwood Park, the arson of the equipment is a cowardly way to voice their opposition.
Waimanalo has a solid community that is committed to helping others with positive solutions. A recent article quoted a community member saying 95% oppose the project — that is not a factual statement. Many support the project because it will not only improve our public green open spaces but be a place where our children can thrive.
