HAGATNA, Guam >> Guam residents seeking abortions must travel beyond the island due to a lack of providers.

The Pacific Daily News reported Monday that abortions are legal on Guam, but no doctors there have offered the procedure since the last abortion provider retired last year.

The Guam Office of Vital Statistics says there have not been any reported abortions in the U.S. territory since May 2018.

Guam law allows abortions within 13 weeks by a licensed provider.

The law says anyone who terminates a pregnancy — including a pregnant woman — without the assistance of a doctor can be charged with a third-degree felony.

Doctors can legally refuse to perform abortions, unless there is a medical emergency.

The Bureau of Women’s Affairs director says she is concerned about the lack of choice.
