Bei Bei celebrates 4th birthday at National Zoo
Giant panda Bei Bei received a panda-friendly frozen cake for his fourth birthday today at the National Zoo in Washington D.C.
The cake was made of his “favorite foods,” including apple and grape juice, leaf-eater biscuits, applesauce, apples, pears, bananas, carrots, cooked sweet potatoes and sugar cane, the zoo said.
Bei Bei, who was born at the zoo, will move to China now that he is 4 years old as part of the zoo’s giant panda breeding agreement, the zoo said.
Bei Bei’s name, which means “precious, treasure” in Mandarin Chinese, was selected by Michelle Obama — then first lady of the U.S. — and Peng Liyuan, the first lady of China. Bei Bei’s name compliments his older sister’s name Bao Bao, the zoo said. Bao Bao moved to China in 2017 and will be 6 years old tomorrow.
A date for Bei Bei’s move will be confirmed within the next few months.
