Police closed Date Street today between Kapiolani Boulevard and Laau Street because of a house fire.

Honolulu firefighters found a Kapahulu fire at an unoccupied single-story house fully involved when they arrived today.

The fire started about 1:15 p.m.

Battalion Chief Brett Mau said the house was empty, but not abandoned. No one was found inside.

He said the house, located at 2730 Date St. near Olokele Avenue, was completely destroyed.

Nine companies with 39 personnel responded and had the blaze under control at 1:30 p.m.

The house and a parked car appeared to have been destroyed by the blaze, which sent thick black smoke billowing over the Ala Wai Golf Course.

A home on the Ewa side of it received some minor heat damage, Mau said.

Police closed Date Street between Laau Street and Kapiolani Boulevard for about two hours as firefighters battled then investigated the blaze.
