A 48-year-old man has died from injuries sustained in Tuesday’s collision with a pickup truck while riding a bicycle in Kalihi.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Pesamino Letuli of Waianae.

The collision occurred at the intersection of N. Nimitz Highway and Kalihi Street at about 6:55 p.m.

Police said a 1992 Ford pickup truck operated by a 58-year-old man was traveling eastbound on the highway when the vehicle collided with a bicyclist traveling southbound on Kalihi Street in a marked crosswalk but against a “don’t walk” red palm signal.

The bicyclist later identified as Letuli was taken in critical condition where he died Wednesday. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

Police said speed, alcohol or drugs were not involved on the part of the pickup driver. It’s unknown at this time whether they were factors on the part of the bicyclist.

This is the 43rd traffic-related fatality on Oahu this year. The same number of traffic-related occurred on the island at the same time last year.
