A total of 32 students at Lanai High & Elementary School have tested positive for the coronavirus as the island grapples with a coronavirus outbreak, according to the Department of Education.

No employees of the school have tested positive for COVID-19 so far despite mass testing.

The island is under lockdown to try to stem the spread of the disease. The Department of Health said the main drivers of transmission were large social gatherings and household spread.

Lanai High & Elementary has 570 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The school had started bringing back elementary students to campus this month but switched to distance learning for all Oct. 22 — even before any students tested positive. The move came as the first cases cropped up in the community.

Lanai has 3,000 residents and had been coronavirus-free until the current outbreak. There were 97 confirmed cases on the island as of noon today.
